Powder Room Remodel
In late 2019, I had owned my house for roughly 12 1/2 years. I’d slowly been making updates starting with my kitchen in 2012, then my owner’s bathroom in 2015. Some fresh paint there, a new light fixture there, things were starting to feel more like me and a lot less like the builder-chosen fixtures that were in place when I originally purchased my home.
That brings us to my guest powder room. Each year (pre-Covid), I host a Christmas party and my small powder room gets used often as you would imagine. So, i figured it was time to give her a makeover. First thing to go was the dated light fixture (see in video below), and the bowl sink. I remember loving this cute little bowl sink 12 1/2 years ago, but I knew I wanted something more clean and timeless.
I also knew given the size of the room, I wanted to do something bold and dramatic, something more than just a splash of paint. Thats when I knew I wanted to do wallpaper. I looked and looked at various options from Serena and Lily and Schumacher and just couldn’t find anything that spoke to me. I proceeded on with having the walls prepped. Not so fun fact: I learned throughout this process that standard sheetrock walls aren’t wallpaper ready. I had to have them sanded down/smoothed out, then primed.
I special ordered my powder vanity from Restoration Hardware. The lighting, mirror and fixtures I found at Rejuvenation. I love their selection of timeless and classic lighting. While work continued, I still struggled to decide on a wallpaper that I wanted. But then, while scrolling endlessly through Instagram one day, I stopped on a photo of Ellie Cashman’s. I’ve followed her for a few years after seeing her gorgeous, oversized, floral wallpaper/mural designs. My wallpaper search ended there as I knew this was the bold drama I was looking for!
Following her simple instructions on how to measure, I placed my order. They were great about answering any questions I had specific to the paper. Example; I had initial concerns about the actual paper the designs are printed on. If I were putting this paper in a full-size bath with a shower, you would want to ensure you chose the right material so that your wallpaper isn’t affected by moisture. Since this was just for my powder bath, I didn’t have to worry.
I could not be happier the end result. I love the way the wallpaper glows under the warm light. It’s almost like stepping in to a classic Victorian time capsule.
